Steel-toed boots protect feet from heavy objects, sharp materials, chemicals, and electrical hazards. Yet boots that are too loose or tight lead to blisters and discomfort, potentially causing workers to remove them. Proper boot sizing relative to sock thickness must be paired with lacing that avoids pressure points. Other foot protection like metatarsal guards and safety shoes require similar fitting. Maintenance and Replacement Strategies

To mitigate the risks of poorly fitted PPE, organisations must implement equipment maintenance and replacement protocols. PPE condition should be checked regularly for wear, changes in fit, and other issues that would undermine protective performance. Protocols should also guide the replacement of damaged or expired equipment. For optimal protection, PPE must be correctly fitted, regularly inspected, and replaced as needed.

Hazards lurk when PPE does not correctly fit the wearer. Respirators, protective eyewear, gloves, footwear, and other equipment cannot furnish their intended safeguards when poorly matched to the worker’s size and shape or the work being performed.
